Ageism.

“Many Western images of the elderly stem from negative cultural myths and stereotypes, such as the idea that sexuality ends in the 40s or 50s or that senility is inevitable. Gerontologists-scientists who study the elderly-refer to such images as examples of ageism, or prejudice against old people (Butler, 1969; Schaie, 1988; Whitbourne & Hulicka, 1990). Ageism can lead not only to condescending treatment of the elderly (”How are we today, Mrs. Jones?”) but also to discrimination in employment and access to medical care.”

That’s no parody! That’s me! But I only bake pies in the winter. This summer I offer my guests Hezbollitas.

Yes, do check out that most excellent of elderblogs, My Mom’s Blog. And of course you don’t want to miss Time Goes By or Octogenarian. These are great elder sites and worth a visit by folks of any age. I’d provide links but I’m still learning.

- “The (un)Official Comic of the Blogosphere.” It’s barely a month a old and he’s done at least two entries about elderbloggers. I love it when the “kids” of the blogphere pay attention to us elders. Here’s today’s entry: [IMG Senior Netizens] Do click through to the bLaugh site for the commentary on today’s cartoon. Elders are a fast-growing segment of blogosphere. Now if I could just get these two talented guys to refer to us as elders instead of seniors…

We “Elders” of the Internet, and we are many, do wish you would name your cartoon “Elder Netizens” instead of “Senior Netizens”. Senior has become such a hackneyed term.

I’m sure in the mood for some good humor and welcome new cartoons. Will look forward to enjoying some creative wit. Wonder if you’ll be introducing some additional characters in the future to interact and/or contrast with the two above? I, too, wish you’d adopt the term “Elder” instead of “Senior” which belongs in academia - high school and college. Learned about your blog on Time Goes By.

’s interesting to see a niche search company advertising in mainstream media. I wonder if most readers will clue into what blog search means. UPDATE: http://blaugh.com/2006/08/07/senior-netizens/ [IMG Senior Netizens]

lol…my grandma has a MySpace :)

I too prefer the term ‘elder’ to senior. To me Senior netizen sounds like old or elder is a dirty word. I’d much rather be an elder.
You may want to check out Octogenarian or goldenlucyd among other great elder blogs.

I’ll be 60 next month, and I don’t care what you call us older folks, just so long as it’s not too late for dinner! Some of us are a little speedier than others.

dog knows everything about blogs and blogging. So we might as well have fun laughing about this right now. There will of course be newer things that the older generations will have trouble keeping up with, but that’s a prerequisite of sorts. Enjoy!Popularity: 1% [?] Sphere: Related Content
