Ted took a break from acting to take care of Casey and their newborn. Casey spent three and a half months in the hospital, and Ted slept on the floor of the hospital room during the first three weeks of her stay.
Doctors were uncertain about Casey’s ability to walk again, but Casey is nothing if not diligent. Within three years, Casey was able to regain much of her mobility. They later adopted their second daughter, Alexis, who was born in 1985.

Regrettably, the stroke Casey suffered had lasting effects on both her physical health and her relationship with Ted Danson. During a recent episode of the podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Ted admitted that he and Casey often argued during her recovery.
“We’d have these fights that were basically, “Where were you when I was having this stroke? Why didn’t you keep that from happening?’ and I would respond. ‘You almost died. You said you weren’t going to leave me, ever.’”
In 1993, Casey Coates and Ted Danson agreed to a divorce.
Aside from their waning love for each other, the biggest contributor to their divorce was Ted’s affair with actress Whoopi Goldberg.
