Rose went to Notre Dame High School, an all-girls institution that shaped much of her early life. She already showed a keen interest from a young age, and the school, followed by the Ontario College of Art and Design University helped her hone her skills even more. She ended up earning a degree in material Arts.
Not much else is known about Rose’s early life since she led a pretty regular one until famous actor John Candy stepped in.
How Did Rosemary Meet Her Husband?
Rosemary Margaret Hobor and John Candy’s love story began on a blind date, a classic setup in the mid-1970s that would lead to a beautiful life together.
Their first meeting was filled with laughter and connection, and it didn’t take long for John to realize that he wanted to keep Rosemary close.
Candy was a resourceful one, he found a clever way to spend more time with her. He asked for her help typing a script, which was basically his excuse to meet her over and over. Did she know? We don’t know. Do we think she knew? Absolutely!
The Beginning of Their Life
On April 28, 1979, the couple exchanged vows in a charming ceremony surrounded by family and close friends in Toronto. As they settled into married life, Rosemary and John welcomed two children: Jennifer Anne Candy on February 3, 1980, and Christopher Michael Candy on September 23, 1984.

You might have noticed that, until now, we haven’t gone into specific information or highlights, and you would be right. Even until their marriage, John Candy wasn’t as big of an actor as he became later on.
Soon after, John’s career in comedy started to flourish. He became a household name in the 1980s, known for his roles in beloved films like Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, and the all-time fan favorite, Home Alone.
Despite his rising fame, John remained devoted to his family. The fame and money didn’t change him, and he often made time for family outings and cherished moments at home. He was seen by many as one of the most respectable husbands back at the time.

John Candy’s Struggle
No John Candy fan is a stranger to his struggle with obesity. He did try his best to remain in shape, especially since he comes down from a family that has a risk of heart attacks. His father had passed away from a heart disease at a young age.
His doctor and loved ones warned him more than once, but the fact remains that he failed to maintain his weight. If anything, his average was around 300 pounds.
The Sudden Death
Despite his efforts to manage his health through diet and exercise, tragedy struck on March 4, 1994. While filming Wagons East in Mexico, John suffered a fatal heart attack at just 43 years old.

The man was loved by everyone. His wife was devastated, and her brother was shaken as well. He said and we quote: “None of us believed it would happen. The whole family is in turmoil.”
The film Wagons East was released just five months later. It was dedicated to him.
Rosemary Margaret Hobor After John Candy
Rosemary mourned her husband after his passing, but she still remained strong for her two children. Years later, even when it would be perfectly acceptable for her to remarry, Rose decided not to remarry after the death of her husband.
As of 2024, Rose is still a single mother who takes care of her now grown-up children, Jennifer and Christopher—all while maintaining a private life away from the spotlight.
It’s safe to say that she has dedicated herself to her family and her artistic pursuits, primarily in ceramics and painting, but without forgetting about John.
On Father’s Day of 2023, she posted a picture of her late husband on Instagram. She said: With love on this Fathers Day. Miss you. You imparted the gift of love and laughter to our children Jennifer and Christopher. They are amazing.” You can view the post on her Instagram @helllorose.
